Katie, my friend Al and I decided to take our friend George Walker up on his offer to come and see them in Weslaco. We left around 10:30 and first stopped at the Basilica so that we could drop off some clothes for the Mexican kids and retrieve our suitcase from Sister Maureen's truck. I put the clothes in the truck and saw that she already had a couple of big bags of goods for the Mexican families. I got our suitcase...then we went inside to see Sister Maureen.
She was busy working away at her computer in the Media Centre, which she runs for the Diocese of Brownsville. We introduced Al, and told her that Al had donated some dollars to be used for the kids. We gave Sister Maureen the sponsor money for Libby, and after some quick pleasant conversation we were off again.
On the way to Weslaco I had a brainwave, I knew that Al had not been to the famous Gonzalez Burgers, which I have posted about in the past and shared pictures as well. Everyone thought that was a capital idea. We arrived at the sign less Gonzalez Burgers and as usual lots of cars on the street, people sitting outside on picnic tables, a pretty good lineup inside and all the seats full. That did not dissuade us, so we waited in line and placed our order. We received the number 40. We found a couple of empty chairs and noticed that they were serving #16. We then knew that we had a fairly long wait until the food was ready.
In the meantime we had some pleasant conversation, and the people next to us were playing cards while they were waiting. The cards were interesting as they were coated with vinyl and you could see through the middle. Perfect for anywhere where it might be dirty or greasy as they can be washed off. Never seen them before and they told us they got them at HEB. Al said he would get some for him and also for us, we thought they were so good.
Turns out the man and woman run a massage and facial parlor in Mission. They were very nice and friendly, and they told us about another really good burger place in Mission. They said the burgers are not as large but are still very good and they won't go anywhere else except those two places.

Now, many of you may know that Katie and I do not eat red meat and hardly ever eat any other kind of meat. We have been complete Vegans for months and I wrote a blog about our experience. Now I would say we are mostly vegetarian, but we do not want to be completely strict about anything. All I can say is when we stray we stray big time! by having something like a Gonzalez Burger.
After I would guess an hour, our number was called, and we got our huge burgers, and 1 order of half onion rings and half fries. The order of rings and fries is large enough to serve two people easily. Al bit into his burger and proceeded to tell us that we were not kidding, he was enjoying this treat, tremendously. We did as well.
Gonzalez Burgers is only open 4 hours per day, 6 days a week. We figured in an hour they take in over $1,200 minimum. That's about $5,000 per day being conservative. $30,000 per week. They close during the summer not sure exactly when as their business is mostly supported by Winter Texans.
After our delicious meal we headed off to Weslaco, and arrived at Ranchero Village. We found the trailer that George and Claire were renting as Al had been there before. George and Claire were packing up because they had to be out of the trailer the next day. The home is beautiful and only 3 years old with two bathrooms and two bedrooms. We sat outside and had some libations. I hadn't seen Claire for a long time and it was very good to see her. After introductions to Katie, we had some very pleasant conversation and some laughs. It was very enjoyable and both George and Claire are very nice people. We then said our goodbyes and off we went again on the way home.
Al dropped us off, and then it was time for Katie and I to relax for the evening.
and so ended another great day in the Valley.
