A dream getaway for a Manitoba couple has turned into a nightmare after they said squatters moved into their winter home in Texas.
Ines and Lee Harrison had spent the last 12 winters in their Donna, Texas mobile home but decided to sell it because the drive from their residence in Lac du Bonnet was getting to be too much.
The Harrisons, who are in their late 70s, put their mobile home up for sale in August 2011.
They got a call from a woman who said she was interested in buying it.
The Harrisons gave a key to a neighbour to show it to the woman and her boyfriend. The woman and her boyfriend put down a $2,500 deposit on the place to hold it, promising to pay the rest later. The Harrisons later learned the woman and her boyfriend didn't return the key and moved into the home, saying it was their own place.
"They were never told they could live there," said Lee Harrison.
Instead of spending their last winter in their Texas home, the Harrisons have been staying in hotels for the last two months as they fight to get the woman and her boyfriend out of their home.
"My fear is we're going to lose everything," said Lee Henderson.
Their fate now lies in the hands of a Texas judge who will decide whether or not they will get their home back.
Their next court appearance is set for Jan. 18. In December, a Texas judge ruled against a family of squatters who had moved into a vacant home.
The Harrisons hope to receive a similar verdict.
