Day 26 Friday

Saturday, March 31, 2012

Day after the storm and all is well. We dodged a bullet here in Pharr. Katie and I did a bit of grocery shopping in the morning, then went to Bonnie's in the afternoon so I could install her router and Nettalk phone device. I had configured pretty well everything at home, so the install went pretty smoothly.

The rest of the day was spent puttering around, we grabbed pizza for supper from Pizza Hut. We changed the crust on the order and were disappointed in the result. We won't be doing that again, and probably not ordering from there anymore.

Watched some TV at night. Pretty relaxing day overall.

and so ended another great day in the Valley...

Day 25 Thursday Trip to Mexico and Big Storm!!!!

Friday, March 30, 2012

I'll start off with the storm...There was a tornado about 5 miles from us

There was tremendous amounts of rain, up to 4.1" in some parts of McAllen. Big lightening shows, high winds and hail. Flooded streets. Water was up over doors and windows of stores. Lots of power outages and cars broke down from flooded engines. One of the Meteorologists on TV said this was the worst he has seen in 30 years. At time the hail in parts of McAllen lasted 30 minutes. Video below.

Lots of cars in places where the water was up to the windows. We were very lucky here in Pharr, got a very small amount of hail, our power did not go out, and all was good. When they start talking about Tornadoes though, the thought of being in a mobile home like we are is not very comforting!

I hope all our Mexican kids did alright, good thing we went to Mexico yesterday, because the roads are so bad in some parts they would most likely be impassable today!.

MEXICO TO SEE THE GIRLS!

We net Sister Maureen, Ken and Vickey on the Texas side of the International Bridge around 2:15. Got waved through the Mexican check point even though Sister Maureen had the back full of clothes, medicine, food, clothes etc. Our roller bag on wheels we put between Katie and I on the back seat as we didn't need more attention to what was in the truck.

Sister Maureen had to pay some bills, deliver some medicine and other items to a clinic, then we were off to our little Vickey's place. Sr. Maureen, Ken and Vickey still had other things to do in Canalas, so they dropped Katie and I off to spend time with Vickey and her family. This caused a little trepidation on my part as they speak absolutely no English. Previously Sister Maureen was always there to perform translation duties. Vickey came out of the house as she always does, running at full speed, up into my arms, puts her head on my shoulder and just hugs and doesn't want to let go until I give her to Katie. What a feeling!

We had some gum and a few odds and ends for the kids...and they are always happy to get anything. Here is Vickey playing with one of the things...and her gum in the other hand.

We watched the kids play for awhile and they took out the soccer ball we gave them last time and had some fun. Then we decided it would be fun for the kids to write on Katie's cast. So I took out my phone and translator and we tried to get them to get us crayons and or markers or something. It was hilarious! The trouble with the translator is that it has a mind of its own. I say something in English and sometimes it gets it right, but sometimes it just says whatever it wants. So if it was correct what I said and translated into Spanish out load, I would shake my head yes and the kids would all yell "Si". But if it was wrong, I would shake my head no and the kids would all yell out "No!" and laugh and laugh. It was a lot of fun and this went on for a long time, and we never did convince them to go inside and get us what we needed. They got crayon just fine, and paper, and a few other things, but retrieving it from le casa did not resonate with them...

here are some other photos from Vickey's place...

Then the red truck rolled up again...and we were off...we stopped at the place where we always stop where they distribute the food and clothes Sister Maureen brings. The kids are so cute...and Katie and I always bring enough suckers for every child.

After spending some time there, emptying out the truck, we were off again to see our girl Libby. Karily came flying out of the house, up into my arms and gave me the biggest hug. These kids are so loving it's unbelievable.

Baby Eric was sleeping on the bed as usual, Erica has to take him to Monterrey Again next week to see the Doctor. Libby had obviously just been sleeping as she was rubbing her eyes and did not seem quite with it. She looked adorable. Soon we were inside giving the kids the loot we had brought. We brought them a bag of mini donuts, gum, skipping rope, things for their hair, a barbie doll each, clothes, paddle toys, pictures in a frame, one for Karily of Durga her sponsor (Madrina), and one of Katie and I holding Libby. We also gave them the electronic tablet like learning device, which is Spanish and English that they can learn and have a lot of fun with. We also gave them some rechargeable batteries and a charger as the electronic device takes 3 AA's.

Libby came over and gave me a big hug as she did for Katie. Karily is so thoughtful, she went in the other room and carried out chairs, and she instructed me to "sit" then she disappeared for quite a while.

We learned soon thereafter, that she had taken her bike and ridden into town to get her dad who works at a Dentist's office. He is not a dentist, he works there in some capacity. She returned with him, and we could immediately tell, that he is a good guy who is a family man. We were very pleased to see that.

We had lots of fun and the kids obviously liked their gifts. Libby spent a lot of time with Katie plays with the learning tablet. It was fun to watch her face.

Not quite awake...

what a sweetheart...

Both kids skipping...Karily is very good at it...Libby was having a hard time because the rope is too long...but she was doing better at the end and Karily will show her.

Here is a picture of all of us

Photobucket

We had such a good time...and we just love those two little ones...Karily was happy with her picture of Durga and took it outside to show one of her friend her "Madrina".

Libby would just come over every once in a while and give a big hug for no particular reason...making me melt.

here are some other photos

Then unfortunately it was time to go...so sad...have to wait until next year...as we were walking out...Libby as usual with no prompting from anyone, took Katie's hand to walk her to the truck because of Katie's cast.

Nice kisses and hugs from both Karily and Libby and then we were on our way back to the USA. No problem at all at the border, and soon we were in our car heading home.

and so ended that part of another great day in the Valley!!!!

Then later...the storm started....

and luckily that part with no damage for us and ended in with exciting night in the Valley!

Day 24 Wednesday

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

After breakfast we got ready, had to take something back to Walmart and then went to CompUSA. They made me a little angry as they sent an email flyer this morning with an item I wanted to get. When we went there, we found out that the only one place they had the item was a town in Illinois and in limited quantities. What a ripoff! Say you have an item to get people into the store, then to find out they don't have it, never did, and of course now they want to sell you one that is more expensive. Lucky there was something else I wanted there or I would have been even more angry.

Then it was off to Bath and Body Works...Katie was buying things for people at work. We walked out with a rather large shopping bag doubled because of
the weight.

When we visited George and Claire Walker in Weslaco a couple of weeks ago, Claire was nice enough to give Katie and I a $15 gift card for PJ Chang's. Because both Claire and George said how good PJ Chang's was, we decided to go there for lunch. It was in the same complex and we had planned it out that way.

After a very short wait, we were taken to our table. Then a server named Sam introduced himself and began to tell us all about how PJ Chang's does things and what options were available to us. He was excellent in describing the dishes and made them all sound so good, that we couldn't decide. Sam offered to do the ordering for us and surprise us. He asked a few questions to ensure he would provide the kinds of things we wanted or not.

A short time later...out came two different chicken dishes, as we said we didn't want beef or seafood. He also brought an extra dish which was english cucumbers in a sauce. He explained the dishes were spicy, then not so spicy, then cool with the cucumbers. There was also white rice and brown rice.

Katie and I dug in...and....it was oh so good!!!! Everything was delicious!!! One of the best meals we have had since we got here. We would definitely go back any time. We cleaned up every last morsel. Sam was great with the service, all in all a very pleasant experience.

We came back home...Katie started to sort out some of the things we are taking home, while I worked on setting up the router and the Nettalk for our friend Bonnie.

Time for supper, the left over spaghetti from yesterday, which was excellent.

Talked to my Bro, Al, for awhile.

A night of relaxation is now in order.

Now the best part is that tomorrow, we get to go to Mexico again with Sister Maureen to see "our girls". Can't wait!

And so ends another great day in the valley....

more later....

Day 23 Tuesday

Yesterday, Tuesday, we mostly just puttered around the trailer, fixing and cleaning. We went to Walmart near Mission in the afternoon, as that was the only one that had what I wanted.

We got the trailer sprayed for termites in the morning which is an annual ritual.

Katie made spaghetti for supper and it was delicious. We are starting to cut back now on the bad food and snacks we have been eating. Time to get smart about that.

Then we just watched some TV and off to bed.

and so ended another great day in the Valley...

Day 22 Monday

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Katie and I decided to go to Mexico yesterday, not to see the kids, but to do a little shopping. I was worried that it might be too much for Katie walking over the lengthy bridge and the streets with her cast and crutches. No matter what I suggested as an alternative, she was adamant that she would be fine.

So off we went...our plan was that after walking over the bridge, we would go straight to the bakery and have coffee and let Katie put her foot up to reduce any swelling. That is exactly what we did, but we didn't realize that the bakery was a few blocks further than we thought. We made it, thought it was a bit difficult for Katie, negotiating the narrow sidewalks with vendors often on both sides, using her crutches. We were lucky as there was quite a bit of rain on the way there, but it stopped when we parked the car.

We got to the bakery, but had a drink rather than coffee as it was hot and Katie was especially hot after her undesired workout. We had the Mexican breakfast and it was very good...it kicks the eggs up a notch.

While having breakfast, three Mexican musicians with guitars were moving through the restaurant playing and singing. They were very good. This bakery restaurant is like a licence to print money. People come in the front door, grab a plastic basket and proceed to the shelves to grab their favourite pastries. The place is usually packed, and the turnover is quick, meaning more $$.

We went with Sister Maureen, Ken and Vickey, and our Vickey and Mom last year. That was fun as Vickey and Mom had never been in a restaurant.

After Katie got rested, we were off to get a few items we wanted. We got a clay pot that we wanted, several bottles of pure vanilla that Katie was getting for friends, and a few other small things.

Now it was time for the long trek back to the USA. Down the street we went and then over the bridge, stopping at least once for Katie to rest. Long lineup at the border, and several people asking about Katie's pink cast or making comments they thought were funny, but they shouldn't quit their day job. The line looked long but was actually moving rather quickly. When I got my turn, I was pulling a duffle bag on wheels that we had all our loot in. The border agent only asked me what was in it but did not look....we could have had Libby or Vickey stashed inside. I think this was mainly due to the length of the line up and my honest face..

Katie was a trooper the whole day...I sure wouldn't have liked walking that much with a big cast on my foot, that you cannot even walk properly with, and crutches under your arms.

Later in the day, Katie and I went over to a friends place so I could fix a problem with a computer. That did not take too long, so we came home and relaxed for the rest of the night.

and so ended another great day in the Valley!

Day 21 Sunday

Monday, March 26, 2012

Not much to report today...bet you are glad that I am not writing so much. Katie and I picked up the pictures for Karily and Libby so that Karily has a picture of her sponsor Durga, and one for Libby of her, Katie, and I. We also have a picture of Surjana for Maria Guadalupe that we will give to Sister Maureen to give to her.

We just did a bit of shopping today, and it was chill out time for the rest of the night.

but...it was another great day in the Valley....

Day 20 Saturday

Sunday, March 25, 2012

Yesterday(Saturday)We had a great visit in the morning from Al and Bonnie. Lots of fun and laughs, and good conversation as usual. Then Katie and I went to do a little shopping and some errands. I wanted to get a hose reel, so that our hose is not just laying on the carport. Seeing as Karily and Libby were so engrossed with Katie and my smart phones, we wanted to see if we could get them a kids cell phone to play with. We didn't find that, but we did find a great English/Spanish educating device that sort of looks like a tablet or a game device...it does numbers and letters, games, music, typing and phonics. It works very well and will be fun and educational for them to play with. Karily especially is so interested in learning English and we are sure Libby will not be far behind. As it runs on AA batteries we will be sure to give them extras or rechargeables.

We went to the drug store to work on photos to give to some of the kids. We do not have pictures for all sponsors, but we have pictures to give to Karily of Durga, Libby...us, and Maria Guadalupe of Surjana. Next year we will try and make sure we have pictures of each sponsor as the kids like to have them.

We were invited to Linda and Brian Connelly's for a barbecue at 5PM. When we arrived several of the couples who we already know were present. It started off with the men and women intermixed on the deck, but as space became more at a premium with more people arriving, it quickly switched to the Texas type of seating arrangement with the men sitting together and the women.

We found out we missed a tremendous meal and cabaret show at the Rec Hall in our park last night. Everyone was raving about it and although we had a good time at the dance, it seems we really missed something good. We had heard about one of the men in the park who sang at the performance, but we didn't know who it was. Now I learned it was Gerry, and here I was sitting right beside him.

Linda and Brian outdid themselves with the food and it was all great. Once I saw Ron with a piece of cheesecake that looked so delicious, I just had to have some as well.

Everyone had a great time as usual. It's because of this particular group of people. Lots of good conversation, tons of laughs, and just a general good time. Thanks to Linda and Brian, we will reciprocate next year when Katie doesn't have a broken bone in her foot.

First ones to leave are Bill and June who are leaving on Monday. We will miss them.

We left around 9PM and went to see Al who was packing up and getting ready to go home. He intended to leave around 3:30AM. We had a nice chat, and then hugs and wishes for a safe journey home all around.

And so ended another great day in the Valley...

more later...

Day 19

One thing that happens here is that it is fairly easy to lose track of days here. As I'm writing this, I realize that after we went to Mexico on Thursday, I missed writing the blog for a full day, that being Friday.

I'm going...hmmmm...what the heck did we do on Friday. Ahh...it's sort of coming back a bit. We had lots of company in the morning to see how Katie was doing. June and Marie came over, Al came over with little dog Katie and Bonnie. Marg Jenner stopped by to see Katie and told us that almost the same thing had happened to her in Winnipeg before she came down. She ended up with a boot on her foot, but hers had to be in a different spot because it healed with no mention of surgery. We had a nice visit with all, and that was very nice of them, my Katie is thankful for all the good friends concerned about her.

Katie says a big thank you to Rick and Shirley Engstrom, Rick is also a retired Winnipeg Police Service member like me. Rick and Shirley thank you....you know what you did!

Katie and I went to HEB to get a few supplies(booze) that we could take to a dance we were going to Friday night, at Tropic Star, the next park to us. There is a band called "The Agency" in the valley that plays many parks with their 50's 60's music. At first we weren't going to go because of Katie's foot, but our friend Al was going, and Bob and Judy, and Bonnie, so we decided even if we just had to sit and listen we would go. I always get a kick out of the fact that you can take whatever you want in terms of drinks to these venues. They are only three hours from 7 to 10, so no one gets hammered, there is lots of dancing going on, which prevents excessive consumption. It all works, and goes on all over the Valley in various parks.

So we went, and found that the rave reviews people give about the Agency are all true. They are an excellent band, and have some really good singers. We liked the Cruisers last year, but I think the Agency is even better. Katie and I decided that if we just got up for the slow dances and basically danced in spot, without our usual fancy dance moves(not) we would be fine...so we did...and it was fine. We discovered that I could move forward a bit but could not move backward, as it made it to hard for Katie.

Didn't take long for Al to get up on the dance floor, and first thing you know he and Bonnie were jiving up a storm.

Katie and I probably had about 5 or 6 slow dances in the 3 hours and it was fun. We also had pleasant conversation and laughs with others at the table and met a few new people. People Katie didn't even know came to talk to her about her foot. She is such a celebrity now! but for the wrong reasons.

Shortly after ten, we all left and it was then time to go home and chill out...which is exactly what we did.

and so ended another great day in the Valley.

Day 18 A Great Day...Mexico Day

Friday, March 23, 2012

In the morning, Katie and I had to do a little grocery shopping at HEB, and Katie had to be tested for another type of driver's licence, that to drive around one of their motorized shopping carts. That was fun.

We were scheduled to meet Sister Maureen and Ken and Vickey at circa 2:00PM. I dropped Katie off at the front of the store near the parking kiosk and went and parked the car. Sister Maureen came shortly after. Katie managed to get in the crew cab without too much difficulty and we were heading over the bridge in a few moments.

On the other side of the bridge...cars coming back from Mexico and getting checked by US customs, there was a continuous line-up across the bridge which is pretty long, continuing onto the main street of Neuvo Progresso and down for about three blocks. Very glad we were not in that line-up. Vickey and Sister Maureen told us that it would likely not be that way by the time we came back. I crossed my fingers and toes at that point.

Then we were off to Vickey's house, after having no problem at all at the Mexican check point, unlike the last time.

Vickey came running again, and we both got our great hugs! The last time we were there the kids were playing with a soccer ball which had outlived its usefulness and just went thud when it hit the ground. Katie and I brought them a new one, and Vickey, Jorge, and Jose Maria (Pancho Villa) were into it in no time flat.

The last time we were there Vickey had a piece of paper wrapped around her finger for a cut, so we brought her bandages. We brought a little something for each of the kids Jorge, Maria, Jose Maria, and of course Vickey.

We sat down and had a coke, and had fun watching the kids...

Then we got our adiós hugs and kisses from Vickey and we were off to see our newest little one, Libby, who did not yet know that we were going to sponsor her.

more coming......

We got to Libby's place and Karily and her came running. All the kids know who it is when Sister Maureen's red truck rolls up. We got immediate hugs from Karily and Libby. It is amazing to me that even though Karily has never met her sponsor Durga, and Libby had no sponsor, that the kids remembered us from last visit, and were so glad to see us.

Katie and I had some presents for each of them, but a lot more for Libby. Libby was told by Sister Maureen that we were now Padrino and Madrino her sponsors...she basically said Me? in Spanish and then a great big smile came over her face.

We started then to give her the gifts we had brought for her...

Photobucket

We brought her a book bag, crayons, markers, pencil sharpeners for each, pencils, colouring books, rulers, and erasers...all for school. Libby is in "kinder" now but will go into grade 1 in August.

We brought Karily a couple of books with english numbers, colours, and puzzles, as we know she is very anxious to learn and curious. She immediatly rattled off her english numbers up to 25 like it was nothing. Then she started pointing out the various colors and said them all in English. She is so smart!!!
Katie gave mom some $$ as she will have to take the baby "Eric" to Monterrey again to see the Doctor.

Karily and Libby obviously really like each other, and their personalities are great! You can just be sitting there one minute and the next one of the two will just walk over and give you a hug for no particular reason, other than they like you. What a feeling!

Libby had all her gifts spread out on the bed and then proceeded to put them all in her new bookbag.

Mom(Erica)showed us an outfit that Libby will wear at school for spring time. Libby will be a flower...

and what a cute flower she is...you can't see the dress in the photo but she is going to look adorable.

Katie showed Karily a picture of her sponsor Durga on her phone. Karily immediately started going through the pictures by swiping her finger across the screen as if she had been doing it all her life...she also knew when she came to a video that you had to press a button to get it started.

I had her saying Katie and Jim in no time flat.

Katie gave Erica bottle of her favorite hand cream and she was happy. We also gave mom a jar of peanut butter as it lasts and the kids like it. We also gave the kids some easter eggs, and some mini marshmellows.

Karily also liked my phone, and said she wanted to keep it and started walking away with a big smile on her face. What a tease!

We had a lot of fun with those two, and I can't say enough about their personalities. We are lucky just to have a small part of their lives.

Libby grabbed both our hands and wanted a photo with all three of us taken by Vickey. Amazing how she would think of that.

When it was time to go, and without prompting from anyone, Libby walked over to Katie, took her hand, and proceeded to guide and help her to the truck because of Katie having a cast on her foot. How cute and considerate. After more hugs, we were off again. Here are some other photos that we took while we were there. To see captions or larger photos, just click on the photo you want.

more to come....

Now it was time for the red truck to journey to Canalas, Mexico, another settlement of shacks, to pick up a mom and her son. This mom is 52 years old but doesn't look it and has 14 children. This is her youngest who is about 8 or 9. The boy was suffering from an ear infection and the mom could not find anyone to treat him for a month. She was trying all sorts of home remedies, but he was still not better. So Katie and I managed to shove over in the back and drove back to Progresso, about 15 miles, to see a Doctor that Sister Maureen deals with for the kids and parents. Here we are, going to the Doctor's office.

Unlike Katie's previous experience over the last few days with Doctor's, we were the only ones there, and the office was clean and cool. We did not have to wait but a few minutes, mom and son saw the Doctor, and came out with two prescriptions. Sister Maureen paid the Doctor who obviously gives her a break for the work she is doing, $10. Back to the truck and off to the pharmacy just down the street. Sister Maureen went in to get the prescriptions filled, while we were entertained outside by music and a dancing pharmacist. The man inside the suit is a real Doctor of Pharmacy and owns it. He had every dance move that you could imagine, and never stopped the whole time...it was hilarious!

Shortly, Sister Maureen came out, with the dancing continuing, and we were off again back to Canalas to drop mom and son off. then it was back to Progresso again where we returned to Karily and Libby's house as Sister Maureen had forgotten to give Erica something. More hugs from the girls while we were still in the truck, and with them throwing kisses, we were off again.

We stopped at a little store where we always go, and where Sister Maureen drops off clothes, and the ladies there distribute them. Here was a sight...two of the little ones having a swim in a plastic tub, barely big enough for the two of them, and they were having an absolute ball. Just shows kids don't need fancy pools, sliders, and hoses with sprinklers to have a great time.

Katie snapped some other good photos there as well...

After Sister Maureen finished off giving all sorts of clothing, and some food to the kids and mothers, it was time to head back to the good old USA. Sister Maureen paid the toll on the Mexican side.

Now when we got to the bridge it was about 6PM and there were no cars whatsoever. We even had an open slot to pull into US customs. Passports were produced, then the border agent said they would so a secondary inspection.

We pulled in right beside an SUV that they were tearing apart. They had a guy in the back, one in the front seat, a dog, a long mirror to see underneath, a woman guard on her hands and knees looking underneath, they had screwdrivers and tools inside.

For us, it was open the engine lid, tap the sides of the truck, look in the back, produce passports again, and we then we were allowed to go. They were virtually pulling almost every vehicle over for a secondary inspection so they must have had some information.

Sister Maureen dropped us off a our car, and we were on our way home, after a great rewarding day.

Here is one of the best pictures...one of Vickey....

and now it was out for a bite to eat, then home so Katie could put her foot up to get rid of the swelling and put an ice pack on her lower back as it was hurting. What a trooper!

And so ends another great day in the Valley!

Day 17

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Katie and I went to the Department of Motor Vehicles which is also where we pay our property taxes. We had forms from the Doctor so that we could get a temporary handicap sign. Katie had previously filled out the forms. After some wait again, the guy at the window told us that he could not issue us the sign as we do not have a Texas ID card. Grrrr.....I guess it doesn't matter that they gladly accept our tax payment without a Texas ID card....long story short...another complete waste of time where almost no one tells you the right information.

Now the day turns however, as Katie is getting along quite well with the cast and using one crutch. She does not have much pain except when she has her foot down too long.

The day got even better as our friend June knocked on our door this morning, to come and see Katie. We had a nice conversation, and we love June.

Then our friend Lorraine dropped in later to see Katie, and again, really nice of her and much appreciated by Katie.

About the same time Lorraine was here, Budget Blinds came to measure our back window, so we could put another black sun screen on to keep the blazing afternoon sun out...so I was busy with that, as our neighbors Ron and Marie wanted an estimate as well.

We were babysitting Al's dog who also happens to be named Katie, while he went to get an oil change. He returned about the same time.

Then Bob and Judy came by and they had a very nice bouquet of flowers and a card. That was really nice of them, and was really appreciated by Katie. Al was still here, and we had some more good conversation, before they left. Katie took a good picture of the flowers...

Then for us a night of relaxation...

and a much better day in the Valley...and the weather was great today

Day 16

We had an appointment set to go back to the Doctor to get the results of the xrays at 8:45. There was some more waiting involved as it was very busy. When we got to see Dr. Hernandez, he informed Katie that a bone in her foot was indeed fractured.

He got on his cell phone and phoned an Orthopedic specialist who he recommended highly. The specialist told him that we could come right over, and this was about 10:15. Dr. Hernandez told him we would be there at 11:00AM.

The clerk gave us the address and off we went. Trouble is she gave us the wrong address, and the address she gave us took us to a Neurological clinic. Oh great...now we had to find the correct adddress. Katie phoned the girl back and she was not the least apologetic. We finally got the right address and it was some distance away. By the time we got there it was about 11:20. After filling out another clip board full of questions and going through the usual insurance hassle, we were told that the Doctor read the xrays and said Katie needed a cast, but he was gone to the hospital to do his rounds.

They told an assistant would be doing the casting and it would be $350. We said incredulously, $350 and we don't even get to see the Doctor? After some discussion we said we wouldn't have it casted unless we got to speak to the Doctor about details of the break etc. They said we would have to come back at 2:00PM.

Off we went to kill time, and we came back for 2. Didn't have to wait too long this time, and the paperwork was already done. This was another Doctor Hernandez, he was very good about explaining everything to Katie. He said the break was in the bone in an area which does not get much blood flow. That basically makes it more difficult to heal and perhaps not at all. If they did surgery they would make a small incision at the side of the foot and put a screw in which would stay there. He said there was a chance it might heal on its own but there is no way of knowing that. He said they could cast the foot and Katie could keep it on until we get home and see an orthopedic specialist there. Another set of xrays will then reveal if the foot is healing on its own...if not...then an operation would have to be done.

The cast was then applied, and Katie picked a bright pink color.

Good thing is that it is a walking cast, so Katie is able to use one crutch instead of two at the moment.

Now it was time to go home after two very trying days. Katie had to wait until the cast set properly so it was difficult getting up the stairs into the trailer, but she managed. Katie just has to make sure that if swelling occurs she keeps her foot elevated, and the doctor prescribed anti inflammatory s and pain killers.

Then it was time to stay home, relax, and chill...which is what we did.

and so ends another trying day in the Valley....

more later...

Day 15

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Such a fun day yesterday....not! We spent the whole day trying to get Katie's injured foot looked after. First we went to a walk in clinic just down the street from us. The doctor there was recommended to us by a lady who runs a medical supply business. The place was fine, it was hot outside but it was nicely air conditioned and clean. Obviously this Doctor is popular as we had to wait over two hours.

We went through the process of filling out forms for being a new patient, and supplying all the insurance information, identification and so on. We also had to open a claim with the USA 1-800 number for the Insurance Company, which is this case is Blue Cross. Katie had to get on the phone with them and answer questions about how the injury occurred.

After a long wait we got to met Dr. Max Hernandez.. He hails from the Dominican Replublic. He turned out to be really good...thorough with a really good sense of humour and no sense of trying to rush you out. He gave Katie a couple of prescriptions, one for anti inflammatory and the other for pain and told her to be careful as they are addicting. He said he wasn't worried about Katie as he could tell she is smart. He is right about that one.

Then we had to go to a different location for an x-ray. They x-rayed both the ankle and the foot. Again big wait, and more screw ups with the insurance part and the inability of staff to read the requisition properly, so we had to go through the payment process twice...once for the foot...once for the ankle...ridiculous.

Then we had to drive some distance as part of the requisition for crutches. Again more waiting...more forms to fill out...more problems with insurance coverage...so in the end we had to pay in advance. Katie got her crutches though. The Doctor thought there would not be a fracture so he told us not to get the boot splint until we knew for sure, so we didn't.

We were both tired from such a trying day, so we went out for supper and then finally back home for some much deserved relaxation for Katie.

and so ends a trying day in the Valley....

Day 14

Monday, March 19, 2012

Yesterday we got up early to go golfing with our friends in the Canadian Group. We went to Shary Municipal in Mission for 9 holes then brunch afterwards.
The ladies go together and the men go together. Katie golfed pretty well, I didn't. My driving was o.k. but my chipping was not good. It was still fun and good company.

Afterwards we all went to the Country Omelette for brunch. Again, men sit together and so do the women. It is kind of a strange thing that women and men always get split up for what reason I have no idea.

After brunch, Katie and I went to Harbour Freight which was basically next door. Got some fridge magnets for Al and I got a 32 piece screwdriver and ratchet set for $7.98...unreal!

Then we went to Golf Headquarters and Katie got a nice golf glove for $6.00. and we got see through head covers.

Off we went then to Sprouts Market which a couple of friends told us about. We browsed around there for awhile and picked up some items. It is a very neat store with all sorts of organic products and health related foods.

We came home then, and after awhile we went to the hot tub and pool. No one was in the hot tub so we just relaxed there for awhile. Then we went in the pool and had a nice conversation with an older couple for awhile.

Then it was back to the hot tub before we were set to go home and have supper. I was getting in the hot tub and going down the stairs when I head Katie yell out behind me. She was obviously in pain and couldn't talk for a few minutes. She told me she had missed a step and went over on the side of her foot, and it was extremely painful. She also said she heard like something like a crunch at the time.

We decided the best place to go was home and get ice on it. Katie just held on to me for support, trying not to put weight on the foot as when she did, she was in pain.

Katie just kept icing for the rest of the evening, my friend Al was at the door in no time, and offered to go get us supper. He went and got us a pizza, and that was very much appreciated.

We were supposed to play golf today with Al and Bonnie, but that was obviously a no go.

Today we will go and get treatment somewhere, as it is pretty obvious we can't just let it go.

more later....

Day 13

Saturday, March 17, 2012

Yesterday was pretty nice for weather in the morning. Not to much wind and just the right temperature. I decided I would stain the front of the storage shed which looked kind of weather beaten.

Katie and I had purchased the stain for the shed and also the steps the day before.

Here is a before....

and here is the after...

Nice...what a little stain can do...

Sort of a lazy day after that...went to Home Depot to get a folding table so we can use it for happy hour entertaining. We went with Al.

Al went home as he was not feeling that great nor was his dog "katie".

The rest of the day was just relaxation for Katie an I.

I watched part of the Jets game on the internet...it was great!...go Jets!

and so ended another great day in the Valley!

Day 12

Friday, March 16, 2012

I posted both Day 11 and Day 12 today

Yesterday, Katie and I decided we were going to hit the factory outlet stores at Mercedes. We used to stop on the way down at San Marcos just outside of San Antonio...but...there are over 600 stores there and it is extremely crowded. The parking lots which are massive are always full. It is just far too congested!

Mercedes on the other hand, at least during the week is a pleasure for shopping. Parking is plentiful, it is not overcrowded, and is good to just meander around.

We always hit the Bass Store first. Every year for the past 3 years we have found tremendous bargains at this store. This year was definitely no exception. Katie found two pair of shoes which are normally priced over $100 at 85% off. She ended up paying $16.50 for each pair! I found a really nice paid of shorts there which are normally $54 for $21. So we both left happy.

We hit the perfume store and both left some cash there. Katie got a really nice top at one store. Then it was time to hit Bath and Body works. Jim sat outside on the bench as I knew I was in for a bit of a wait. Nice sitting outside and soaking up the sun. Katie did her best not to take too long, but she was shopping for herself and also for some of the girls at work. She didn't really take too long, but came out with two large shopping bags and less over $100. This is normal for Bath and Body works and we still have to hit the same store different location yet.

We got a few items at the kitchen store, and then since we accomplished what we wanted, we decided to head off. We stopped on the way home at Cici's a buffet style pizza place as we did not have lunch and were hungry. Too bad we forgot, it is ok there..but really nothing to write home about.

When we got home we decided to go to the driving range. Katie was awesome! She was killing the ball and for the most part was straight down the middle even though it was very windy. I also felt good with my efforts.

Then it was back home and Al and Bonnie came over. For the next couple of hours it was great conversation and the laughs were plentiful. As I mentioned on another day, Bonnie is one of those people you just feel comfortable with. It was a fun night!

Then Katie and I watched some TV and it was off to bed.

And so ends another great day in the Valley!

Day 11

Katie, my friend Al and I decided to take our friend George Walker up on his offer to come and see them in Weslaco. We left around 10:30 and first stopped at the Basilica so that we could drop off some clothes for the Mexican kids and retrieve our suitcase from Sister Maureen's truck. I put the clothes in the truck and saw that she already had a couple of big bags of goods for the Mexican families. I got our suitcase...then we went inside to see Sister Maureen.

She was busy working away at her computer in the Media Centre, which she runs for the Diocese of Brownsville. We introduced Al, and told her that Al had donated some dollars to be used for the kids. We gave Sister Maureen the sponsor money for Libby, and after some quick pleasant conversation we were off again.

On the way to Weslaco I had a brainwave, I knew that Al had not been to the famous Gonzalez Burgers, which I have posted about in the past and shared pictures as well. Everyone thought that was a capital idea. We arrived at the sign less Gonzalez Burgers and as usual lots of cars on the street, people sitting outside on picnic tables, a pretty good lineup inside and all the seats full. That did not dissuade us, so we waited in line and placed our order. We received the number 40. We found a couple of empty chairs and noticed that they were serving #16. We then knew that we had a fairly long wait until the food was ready.

In the meantime we had some pleasant conversation, and the people next to us were playing cards while they were waiting. The cards were interesting as they were coated with vinyl and you could see through the middle. Perfect for anywhere where it might be dirty or greasy as they can be washed off. Never seen them before and they told us they got them at HEB. Al said he would get some for him and also for us, we thought they were so good.

Turns out the man and woman run a massage and facial parlor in Mission. They were very nice and friendly, and they told us about another really good burger place in Mission. They said the burgers are not as large but are still very good and they won't go anywhere else except those two places.

If you want to read some history of Gonzalez burgers....

The Family

Now, many of you may know that Katie and I do not eat red meat and hardly ever eat any other kind of meat. We have been complete Vegans for months and I wrote a blog about our experience. Now I would say we are mostly vegetarian, but we do not want to be completely strict about anything. All I can say is when we stray we stray big time! by having something like a Gonzalez Burger.

After I would guess an hour, our number was called, and we got our huge burgers, and 1 order of half onion rings and half fries. The order of rings and fries is large enough to serve two people easily. Al bit into his burger and proceeded to tell us that we were not kidding, he was enjoying this treat, tremendously. We did as well.

Gonzalez Burgers is only open 4 hours per day, 6 days a week. We figured in an hour they take in over $1,200 minimum. That's about $5,000 per day being conservative. $30,000 per week. They close during the summer not sure exactly when as their business is mostly supported by Winter Texans.

After our delicious meal we headed off to Weslaco, and arrived at Ranchero Village. We found the trailer that George and Claire were renting as Al had been there before. George and Claire were packing up because they had to be out of the trailer the next day. The home is beautiful and only 3 years old with two bathrooms and two bedrooms. We sat outside and had some libations. I hadn't seen Claire for a long time and it was very good to see her. After introductions to Katie, we had some very pleasant conversation and some laughs. It was very enjoyable and both George and Claire are very nice people. We then said our goodbyes and off we went again on the way home.

Al dropped us off, and then it was time for Katie and I to relax for the evening.

and so ended another great day in the Valley.

Day 10

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Al and Bob picked me up at 8:30, then we picked up Bill Davis so that we could go to the retired police service breakfast at Victoria Palms in Donna. They make a great breakfast. There were not as many of us as usual there, but good conversation and it is always good to see the other guys.

After breakfast Al dropped me off, and I puttered around until Katie came back from a shopping expedition with the car.

Then Katie and I went to do a bit more shopping for a few things we needed and we wanted to get a few things for the Mexican kids Karily and Libby. We also got a soccer ball for Vicky's family as their soccer ball is completely shot.

We got back at just the right time when UPS arrived with a couple of items we had ordered from Amazon.com. Then it was off to Bill and June's for an afternoon happy hour.

We didn't get home until 9PM so the happy hour was actually 5 hours. Bill and June always out do themselves preparing food and making sure that everyone has drinks in their hands. They are tremendous hosts!!! Both of them Katie and I love to pieces. They are just great people and we are lucky to be included in their lives even to a small extent.

Everyone else that is invited are also great people and I get a kick out of all of them for different reasons. Some are funny all the time without trying like Bill, others are quiet but all of a sudden will come out with something hilarious.

I just had a great time and Katie did too...it was a very fun night!

Got an email today from Ken and Vickey and also one from Sister Maureen. Vickey included a couple of pictures she had taken of Maria Guadalupe. I indicated the other day I was not so sure she understood exactly what was going on, as we caught up to her at the end of the day.

Sister Maureen and Ken and Vickey explained exactly was what going on, about her sponsor, and the fact that Katie and I were friends of her sponsor and just delivering and passing on messages. We are grateful they did that.

That's Maria and her mom who work at a tortilla shop.

The email from Ken and Vickey and Sister Maureen, indicated that they had been to Karily and Libby's house, but they did not tell Libby we were going to be her sponsors. Sr. Maureen said she is going to be so excited when she finds out. We are set to back next Thursday to see them, and we have some school supplies and presents for Libby and also for Kerillee. We are so looking forward to the visit and of course we will also see Vickey and her family.

Katie got an email from Ella who she used to work with who is enquiring about sponsoring a child.

Also Linda Connelly wants us to talk to Sr. Maureen about doing a fund raiser in the park next year to raise funds to buy uniforms for the kids to go to school, and is thinking that is a good way to help more kids. We will talk to Sister Maureen about this idea. Pretty nice of Linda to think about it and she said she is willing to organize it. Linda was one of the great people at Bill and June's tonight.

Got great news today from a friend of ours who is having an ongoing battle with Cancer. He is undergoing an experimental treatment along with Chemo for some time now. His PSA level is down significantly, his cancer has not spread, the tumour is reduced, and if things keep going like this his Chemo will be reduced and he will get a treatment holiday near the end of summer. That is great news indeed!

and so ends another great day in the Valley!

more later....

Day 9

Yikes...these days are starting to roll by pretty fast. I'm starting to lose track a bit of what we are doing when. Yesterday we went to pay our trailer insurance and looked around a bit at a furniture store for some bedroom furniture.

Then we went to see Sister Maureen at the Basilica so that we could give her the money to sponsor Libby and drop off some more clothes we have. Unfortunately we got there after she had already left for the day.

We decided to go to Frank Smith Toyota to get an oil change and tire rotation on the Rav 4.

We stopped at Al's for a drink and some pleasant conversation and Judy brought us our tickets for a dance we are going to go to on March 23rd at Tropic Star park which is next to ours.

We did a bit more shopping and then came home. Katie made roasted vegetables for supper which was really good, then we just relaxed and watched some Tv.

so ended another great day in the valley!

more later...

Day 8

Monday, March 12, 2012

We were supposed to go golfing with the Cdn group yesterday(Sunday)...but because of Katie's back hurting we decided we wouldn't go. Turns out it didn't matter anyway as it was raining in the morning.

Later on the rain stopped, so Katie, Al, and myself went shopping to get some of the hardware we needed to put up the wind/sun shades on the carport.

Came back, had some lunch, and then Al and I proceeded to put up the material(pictures posted yesterday). The installation procedure we decided on went very well.

While we were doing that, Katie was planting the flowers we bought the other day in the front of the trailer.

Then we sat down to admire our work and have a beer. Told Al I would buy him supper so he went home to grab a shower, I did the same and Al came back at 6:00 so that we could go out for supper.

We went to El Patio in Mission and had the chicken strips. The meal was very good as usual and with the portions so large we brought several home which can be used to make chicken salad during the week.

Then a bit of TV and off to bed...still tired from the time change.

And so ends another great day in the Valley...

more later...

I was in a bit of a hurry this morning so didn't get a chance to post about Bonnie, a friend of Al's. Bonnie came with us to Al Patio for Supper. Bonnie is one of those type of people who are comfortable in their own skin, who don't try and put on airs, are happy and fun, and when you meet them for the first time, you feel that you've known them much longer than that.

Katie and Bonnie got along very well and I liked her alot as well. We had fun conversation over our meal. Afterwards Katie and I showed them Canyon Lake RV Park where Katie and I first spent time in the valley.

Then we went back to Bonnie's place, had a nitecap and some more pleasant conversation. Bonnie's place is going to be great, she is doing a lot of work herself and you can just see the potential. She is obviously a get to it Lady.

Now for the best part...she shot 77 on the golf course yesterday and that was with a penalty. Wow!...but we are still going to set up a 4 some with Al and Bonnie and Katie and I for next week.

It was a very good nite!

Day 7

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Yesterday, Katie and I went to Don-Wes Flea Market in the morning to pick up our sun/wind shades which we are going to install on the car port. It now looks like this....

My friend Al and I put them up together...went very well...and I'm extremely pleased with the results...it will make a big difference keeping the wind and sun out.

We came back, had some lunch, and then it was off to the driving range to hit balls for the first time. First few very very bad, but then it all started to come back. We hit a couple of buckets, but probably overdid it a bit...so Katie's back was sore.

Then we went to Bob and Judy's for an excellent turkey dinner with all the trimmings prepared by Bob and Judy. It was very good.

Then I worked on their computers a bit and helped Judy get her GPS golf software working.

Then it was back home...some relaxation...set the clocks forward...and off to bed.

And so ends another great day in the valley...

more later

Day 6

Saturday, March 10, 2012

After a busy day yesterday...Friday was a lot more about relaxing...part of the reason is that it rained most of the day.

I didn't really intend to write much anyway, as I thought that with the length of what I wrote yesterday, that anyone following might take more time to read about the Mexico trip and less about the mundane.

My friend Al decided to get a new Laptop and did. We spent some time getting it all set up after that and it looks good now. It's a Lenovo a very nice unit.

Spent a bit of time cleaning up the front of the trailer...the fake grass under the planters had to go...it was torn from the wind.

Apart from that it was all about puttering and relaxation.

and another great day in the Valley

more later....

Day 5 Mexico Day

Friday, March 9, 2012

What a great day!!! In the morning, Katie got all the donated clothes and gifts from sponsors organized and put them in one of our large suitcases with wheels as we knew it would be fairly heavy and we had to walk from the parking lot, over the international bridge into Mexico. We were scheduled to meet Sister Maureen on the Mexico side about 1:40PM. She is almost always on time and our friends Ken and Vickey from Weslaco usually come with her. Sure enough we see the familiar red truck coming over the bridge. Hmmm...things seem to be taking a bit longer at the checkpoint. Then Sr. Maureen pulls her truck into the first parking spot. This is unusual. She gives us a signal to come to her as we were waiting on the sidewalk about 1/4 block away. Sr. Maureen tells her that the border official who is a rules stickler is now concerned about a whole lot of peanut butter and jam sandwiches, and wants to know what the value is.

The story is, that this is basically the only official that ever bothers Sr. Maureen. If he is not satisfied, he will turn her around, back over the bridge, and force her to go back towards Pharr about 25 miles, cross the border at the Pharr International Bridge, fill out a bunch of papers and perhaps pay some duty, then on the highway inside Mexico back to Neuvo Progresso. This whole process just adds a big loop and causes a lot of wasted time for no real reason. Everything that Sr. Maureen brings over to help the kids and their families is only of value to them and nothing else. Seems ridiculous that someone that is helping Mexican children and their families gets hassled like this for no real reason. As Sister Maureen said though it is basically only this one guy that causes problems.

Sister Maureen is in the process of getting some papers so that this will not happen again, but they are still not ready. After some negotiation and warnings from him, we are finally allowed to proceed on without doing the loop.

Just to show how silly this all is...We put our big suitcase in the back of the truck after the offical first stopped Sr. Maureen. He didn't care about the suitcase or even look inside. It could have been full of all sorts of contraband. Also, when Katie and I walk across the bridge pulling the suitcase and go right beside the checkpoint where you could virtually reach out and touch them...they don't care...we just walk right by...and could be taking anything...guns, food, drugs, anything in...but lets give Sister Maureen a hard time for helping the kids and families! What a joke!

Now that we're on our way...first stop...our little one Vickey's house...to see Vickey, her brother Jose Maria @Pancho Villa(the ham) her sister Maria, brother Jorge, Grandma, and Vickey's mom. Vickey's dad was also there but after greetings all around he disappeared. Lots of the men seem to do this as we discovered last year...but not all.

As we pulled up the kids came running to Sr. Maureen side of the truck. I got out the passenger side, walked around the back of the truck and as soon as I turned the corner Vickey came running at full speed, up into my arms, and started hugging and just wouldn't let go. She is just a sweetheart and obviously from the reception I got and then Katie with the same treatment next...missed us a lot as we did her. Can't describe to you the feeling...it is like the feeling you get when your own kids are small and are so glad to see you. I just whispered in her ear "Te Amo Vickey".

Because of the app I put on my smartphone, I was able to ask her if she likes schook, did she make new friends, tell her we missed her etc. etc. All of the kids got a big kick out of the phone speaking to them in Spanish. I was so glad it worked.

We gave the kids their presents, and we made sure we brought them the same kind of gum that we brought last year which was such a hit, it is in a plastic container in a roll which they can pull out a bit at a time. It was a big hit again this year. Katie and I bought a bag of 50 lollipops to give to all the kids not just Vickey and her siblings...and they were a big hit on the whole trip as you will see from some of the pictures.

Vickey has not really grown very much from last year, and is still cute as a button.

After a great visit and some cokes, we were off to the next destination.

Vickey

We lined up some additional sponsors during the winter so that kids can go to school, so we wanted to get to all the sponsors kids if we could to try and get some pictures for them. This program and some run by others are so successful at getting the kids in school, that the schools have to run two shifts to accommodate all the kids. That is tremendous, because without school they really have no chance at jobs later on or to better themselves in any way. So the next stop was Karily sponsored by Mikkilineni Durga who works with Katie. Durga is married with two children of her own.

This family had to move from Monterrey Mexico with basically only the clothes on their back due to the violence in that part of Mexico. They are much safer now but as you will see from the photos the living conditions are less than ideal(talk about an understatement). Mom just recently had a baby boy who was past term and now has pneumonia. When we got there mom was giving him oxygen from a little mask as without his lips would turn blue. Unfortunately mom will have to make a return trip to Monterrey as his doctors are there. Thanks to Durga's generosity...mom will have some extra funds as she get charged money for the baby's care.

Then we got to meet Karily and Libby! Both of these kids are extremely smart it is not hard to tell that within a few minutes. During the visit Kareely the eldest brought out her school bag which is extremely heavy full of all her books. She pulled out some of her exercise books and showed us her work. She is extremely neat and the work is outstanding! Then she show us her report card 9.8 out of 10 in all subjects and gave us a copy to take back to Durga. Just to show how smart she is...within a month or so of going to her new school she was already picking up some english from her teacher. She looked at us and said in very good english "so what did you do on the weekend?" You had to be there to totally appreciate the moment...this came out of nowhere! Not only that but she fully expected an answer! What a sweetheart! We were in a room at the front of the shack, with nothing but two beds...nothing else....but here are Kareely and her sister Libby, with smiles on their faces, bright and playful, and giving out hugs and Kareely so proud to be showing her excellent work.

Mom seems to be a great mom and we learned that she went all the way through high school. She seems genuinely warm and obviously gives as great care to her kids as she can.

Kareely

Now on to Libby...what can I say...she is adorable with a great personality, lively, has some mischievousness one can tell, playful and happy, and not to hard to tell she will take after her sister by being smart, and will likely do very well in school...trouble is? no sponsor. Well she did have no sponsor until Katie and I decided that we will sponsor her, so that she has a full chance to do as well as possible. She is just a little sweetheart, so she will get some goodies the next time we go, along with some more for Kareely. We hate to give something to one without having something no matter how small, for the other.

Here is a solo shot of Libby....

After leaving Karelly and Libby's house we were on to Juan and his family, who is sponsored by Rhiannon Orloff...who is Katie and my Dentist. She is an awesome Dentist! We had trouble finding Juan at first as they had moved but no one seemed to know that. Luckily one of Sr. Maureen's Mexican helpers came with us in the truck along with her new 8 month old who just kept looking at me with his big dark eyes...so cute! Rhiannon had a bag of goodies for Juan including school supplies, a nice new soccer ball, some shirts and other things...and of course a toothbrush...he had a great time going through his goodie bag. I can't get over how great all the mothers are and how they look after their kids so well.

Juan

Then we had to find Maria..she was not at home and after two attempts...finally got her cousin to hop on his bike and go and get her. she is sponsored by Srujana Reddy who also works with Katie. It was at the end of the day when we finally got to see her, and we knew that Ken and Vickey as well as Sister Maureen would probably want to get home, so we did not spend as much time, as we had to wait for her cousin to find her. We only managed to grab a few quick pictures, and Katie tried to get Maria to say cheese...but the smile did not come. She was just a little shy and it was all happening too fast for her.
I'm sure she will be less shy as time goes on.

Maria

Next it was on to Michelle and her family. Michelle is sponsored by my brother Paul and his wife Doreen. As you will see she is a cutie as well. The mud road to her house gets so bad sometimes when it rains that it becomes impassable. Mom is pretty with a great smile and we also got to meet some other family members. Michelle is small like Vickey. Doreen had given us a box of things for Michelle and you could tell she was delighted and thankful.

Michelle

Next it was on to Omar and his family. Omar was the little guy last year who changed his T shirt three times while we were at Vickey's. Omar lives across the street with his family and sisters. I mentioned last year that one of his sister's just dotes on him. He has a great smile. He is sponsored by an older lady who lives in our Condo building. Her name is Ruth and she is a hoot. Omar has been sending her messages and likewise from her end.

Omar

Here are some misc shots of our adventure yesterday...

Misc 2012 Mexico

We are looking forwared to our next trip...we have some more clothes to drop in the back of Sister Maureen's truck on Monday while she is at work at the Basilica in San Juan, and we also have to give her the money to sponsor Libby. We are also going to try and get some photos of our friend Terry and Arlene's little girl...Carla...who they sponsor on our next trip.

It was almost 6 by the time all was said and done...and Katie and I wandered back over the bridge...showed our passports to the US border guard with no problems, back in the car and off we went into the sunset. And when I say sunset...I mean it...as the sun went down it was bright orange and huge...it was beautiful!

And for us...Another great day in the Valley

more later....
